How I Got Got. . .

“If some of us read the fine print before we got started, we’d most likely renegotiate the contract or abandon ship altogether. That’s why, in this case, it’s best if you don’t check for it at all. I surely didn’t, and that’s how I got got.”

Yvonne Orji, star of the hit show “Insecure,” has never shied away from being unapologetically herself, and that includes being outspoken about her faith. Known for interpreting Biblical stories and metaphors to fit current times, her humorous and accessible approach to faith leaves even non-believers inspired and wanting more.

The way Yvonne describes it, God is a Sovereign Prankster, punking folks long before Ashton Kutcher made it cool. When she meditates on her own life—complete with unforeseen blessings and unanticipated roadblocks—she realizes it’s one big testimony to how God tricked her into living out her wildest dreams. And she wants us to join in on getting bamboozled.

In Bamboozled By Jesus: How God Tricked Me into the Life of My Dreams, Yvonne Orji highlights stories from Scripture that show how God works in completely unexpected ways, referring to God as the “Ancient of Day Ashton Cooper” who punks people in the most loving ways. In the opening chapter of the book, she warns readers against trying to read the “fine print” of God’s plan:

There’s definitely a fine print to getting bamboozled by Jesus, and most times we don’t read it until we’re in too deep. God designed it that way on purpose. If some of us read the fine print before we got started, we’d most likely renegotiate the contract or abandon ship altogether. That’s why, in this case, it’s best if you don’t check for it at all. I surely didn’t, and that’s how I got got.

Later as this popular comedian and star of the hit show “Insecure,”  talks about the night she became a Christian, giving God her “uninhibited yes,” she explains what blind commitment looks like:

Talk about a setup! Sure, at seventeen, it sounded good to commit to remaining a virgin until I was married, but what happens when the fine print still has me single at thirty-seven? You download every dating app, that’s what! No, seriously, in my case, I have to keep trusting that there is a man out there who’s tailor-made just for me, no matter how long it takes (but, like for real tho, hurry up).
