Accidental Magpie God

In the suburbs of western Sydney, Giulio Cuzzilla embarked on a mission to thwart magpies from stealing his cat’s kibble.

Crafting a homemade “owl” scarecrow seemed like a reasonable solution. Magpies are still protected as an endangered species, which rules out many options for dealing with the intruders. And the larger birds are a natural predator for magpies. Yahoo reports:
Giulio Cuzzilla’s problems started when magpies began stealing kibble from his cat’s feeding bowl, so he fashioned together a homemade “owl” to keep them away.
But instead of scaring off magpies, the erected image began to draw them. They would land in front of the effigy, returning each day until a storm destroyed it. While Giulio’s owl attracted daily magpies, his video of two magpies squawking at the image drew over 3.7 million views. The caption to his post is telling:
“I accidentally made a Magpie god.”
Accidentally being the key word here. Because no one would ever make one intentionally.

Key Texts

Exodus 20:3-4 (ESV):
“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”

Isaiah 44:9-10 (ESV):
“All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame. Who fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing?”

Acts 17:22-31 (ESV):
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
